Welcome to
College of Charleston
Aikido Club
Class Info
The CofC Aikido club has class three nights a week, from 6:30P.M. to 8:00P.M. On Monday, and Wednesday classes are in the gym on the corner of George and Meeting St. room J201. On Friday classes are at the Hombu dojo in West Ashley (Map). If you need a ride you can usually get one with some of the other college students going over there.
What is Aikido?
A primary reason people begin the study of Aikido is for self-defense. While Suenaka-Ha Aikido is an effective martial art for self-defense, it also offers a positive philosophy that includes the concept of unification of mind and body (Ki Development). Many of the things you learn on the mat will also enhance activities in your daily life. The techniques of Aikido include a focus on taking your opponents balance and controlling him by using his own energy against him. This approach provides a very powerful means of self-defense, without the requirement for great physical strength which make it ideal as a martial art for self defense, law enforcement, women and people of all physical fitness levels.
How to Join?
If you are interested in practicing Aikido you can stop by any of the classes. This is a college club so it is not expected or required of you to show up to every class. While you will obviously progress the fastest by going to every class, it is not necessary for you to go all three nights. You can either participate the first time or just watch the class. If you want to participate just come in some comfortable clothes that you can work out in, usually sweat pants and a t-shirt works well. Also, it does not matter whether you come in the first week of classes, or half way through the semester. Because of the way Aikido is structured it is easy for someone to join at any time and not be completely lost!
